The Japanese Friendship Garden Lower Gate arose out of the vibrant Sister Cities relationship between San Jose, California, and Okayama, Japan. Construction funding came from citizens of Okayama as well as the City of San Jose. Okayama architect Akihiko Namba donated his design services towards the conceptualization of the gate, while Studio S Squared Architecture provided the construction documents, structural engineering, and construction administration services that helped make the Lower Gate a reality.
