Description:

Winner of a design award from the Maryland Society AIA, the memorial honors fallen officers and required integration within an existing flowerbed configuration at the urban edge of a public park and an existing Columbus Monument. A curved path establishes a new circulation pattern around the beds, and different views of the arrangements as they move toward the new memorial. Five granite pillars (one for each fallen officer) flank the path in a formation radiating from the central flowerbed. In this manner, framing the corner garden, the memory of the officers still guard the community they served while saluting their fellow officers that come down Argonne Drive traveling to and from their shifts. On top of each pillar a replica of the fallen officer’s badge is suspended in a prism that, lit from underneath, glows at night. The light from the memorial animates the park during the dark hours, establishing the corner as a gateway to the community and vantage point for officers that continue to watch over the neighborhood.
