Description:

As a non-profit arts organization grew it left its 200 sf office for a 900 s.f. storefront near downtown Los Angeles. The HeArt Project provides arts workshops to teens in continuation high schools taught by many renowned local artists and designers. The new space allowed for a necessary increase in full-time staff and conference / workshop area.

The interior remodel was supplied in a single truckload from Home Depot for $197. The drawings included were both design drawings and shopping list. The goal of single room project was to allow for some segregated work area while maintaining the sense of the whole. The project uses a limited material palette and simple details to transform the storefront into a home for education and inspiration.

Walls are framed with 2x4 lumber and skinned with stained OSB (Oriented Strand Board) and Stratocore translucent plastic sheeting. Horizontal surfaces are stained ¾” Plywood. Existing walls are painted in two colors following a datum line relating to the built work.

All detailing was done to allow a single Saturday installation by a team of dedicated (although unskilled) volunteers.
